Recently I have decided to take my skills as a web designer to the next level and actually pursue projects individually.

After contacting the client and briefly speaking to him about what he wanted for his site we agreed that I would information/text/etc from him to get an idea of what the site would look like.

So what should I ask for him to provide for me before I get started on it ...

Also what is a reasonable rate per hour to charge considering Im not a professional and Im 18.

You don't charge per hour for the website- you charge for the whole job. Depending on the site, ask him to provide you with the images he would like on the site, the text, stuff like that.

Like number said, you charge the guy a total at the end, and you should ask him to provide any thing specific he wants in the design.

    listen to the guyz above.
i have worked as web designer and the biggest complain is always "naah,i dont like ur images ,i want something good" tell customer to provide images and also ask him abt layouts if he tells u to choose by urself then u r good.

Ive never been paid by the hour. As far as I know most web designers get paid a one off fee.

If the customer didnt like your first attempt then it would be unfair to keep paying you until you got it right.... it would cost a fortune!!!

Depending on how big the company is, I would say anywhere from $50 to $200 dollars is a good estimate.

200 dollars for a whole website? You must be joking right ....
I sometimes do 99Design contests and they charge a minimum of 250 for a very minimal DESIGN not even the design and coding....

Make sure you get staggered payments as you progress.

Set a price, break it up into payments as you do the work, that way, if they pull out, you will have been paid for the work you have done to date.

    sounds like a ripoff
considering you can get a professional flash template from TemplateMonster for under $100
and youve already said youre not a professional...
i assume you didnt win any of those contests?
