I downloaded an app and saved it to my desktop. When I try to open it, I get the message that windows can't open it, and I should choose a program to open it. What program should I use to open it? Should I have used a specific program to download it?

    Hello

Just in case you wondering why Windows could not open that downloaded file and you need a special program to open it is because that downloaded file is compressed. Many times files are compressed to save storage space and to make file transfer faster. It also provides a way to create a container for multiple files.

WinRAR or WinZip are popular programs designed to either compress files or extract files from a compressed archive, resulting in an uncompressed file or collection of files. There are others such as 7-Zip that provide similar functions. It really comes down to a matter of preference and selecting a program that will be able to read a particular type or format of archive such as RAR, ZIP, 7z, etc. WinRAR and 7-Zip are often chosen because of the number of formats that they are capable of handling. However, I believe that WinZip has a higher compression ratio with a trade-off of decreased speed.

    I hope this helps.
